Father-son trip makes its way to Arctic Circle
There were nights, remembers Frank Howrylak, when the world seemed silent -- only the occasional whistles of Arctic wind winding through the trees broke through. "The world is just so big, there's just so much out there," said Howrylak, who spent a month this summer driving with son Martin, 32, all the way up to the Arctic Ocean. "It was really restful. When I look at these pictures, I could go back." .
Winter camping
If you've already got some backpacking experience, winter camping may be the next logical step. If you've never camped before, there is a lot to learn. That's not a reason to stay at home, but it is an important reason to get educated. It may be easiest to learn a seemingly vast set of tricks and skills gradually by tagging along with other more experienced campers and participating in all the processes involved. However you choose to learn, make sure that you ask questions and understand not just what to do but why. Head Lamp asked Carl Battreall, an experienced winter traveler and instructor of the Parks and Rec winter camping and outdoor photography series, about tips for those looking to winter camp. He recommends March as a good month for winter camping because it is usually a little warmer and lighter than the other winter months.
