Looks like tent, feels like hotel

If for some reason you decided to hike for three-four hours on the amazing flowering, watery, yet slightly exhausting trail of Nahal El Al, it would be nice if there would be a pampering Jacuzzi waiting for you at the end of its rocky steep ascent. You can arrange this. All you need to do is stay at the new yurts for couples at the Waterfall Campsite of the Indian Village.

Whoever has heard the name or visited here will definitely be thinking of the Indian teepees that have been at the campsite for the past ten years. But the yurts are new upgraded tents, and when you peek into one of them you will definitely not think about sleeping bags and camping in nature.

Maybe it is the parquet floor, or the large space of the round interior, maybe it is the double beds, the spa robes next to them, or the air-conditioning or LCD televisions.

A walk through the Siskiyous, unencumbered Inn-to-inn hiking on ...

(03-18) 04:00 PDT Galice, Oregon -- Before you march off into the Siskiyou wilderness on the four-day, 40-mile hike through the forested canyon of the Rogue River, some serious packing is in order. Or, rather, unpacking.

Into the "leave home" pile goes your tent. And your sleeping bag. And your pad. And your stove. And your bottled gas. And your cooking pots. And your bear-proof food canister. And your food, save maybe a Clif Bar or two. What's left will fit, with room to spare, into a light daypack.

You'll amble down the riverside path past waterfalls and nesting bald eagles, and waiting for you at the end of each day will be a hot shower, a soft bed with fresh linen, a country supper of (for example) barbecued salmon and blackberry cobbler, and, if you make the proper arrangements, a cooler of cold beer.

They've come a long way, have farther to go

Over the last few decades, women have come a long way in the area of politics and just being able to empower themselves, but there are still many misconceptions that need to be addressed. That was the consensus of six women participating in a panel discussion on women and public policy Thursday. The event was one of several taking place throughout the afternoon and evening at the University of Minnesota, Crookston's Bede Ballroom during the "Red Tent Celebration" in honor of Women's History Month. Each panelist offered her own unique perspective on life as a woman with a certain degree of power to accomplish things. The panel consisted of: Sharon Josephson - A district staff assistant for U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson, she has worked for him since 1991 and worked with him on his campaigns since 1976.

Now is the time to go camping

At this time of year when the nights are still cool and Venus can be spotted burning a hole in the black velvet fabric of the western sky, I like to take up my pack and head off into the woods.

I'll throw in a bedroll, some groceries and a lightweight tent. I don't need and purposely don't take much because leaving the distractions of everyday life behind is what I am after.

Bloomtown: Floral displays delight visitors

With a nod to the famed and ancient gardens of Italy, the 14th annual Festival of Flowers opened its garden gates on the grounds of Providence Hospital on Wednesday morning and ushered the public into what may be the first Italian piazza ever re-created inside a tent in south Alabama.

Despite the incongruity, the piazza in a tent -- centered around an Italian fountain sporting water-spouting lions -- was surprisingly effective. Surrounded by hundreds of pink lacecap hydrangeas and a healthy contingent of fresh faced Azalea Trail Maids in lilacs and blues, the piazza's Mobile-meets-the-Mediterranean theme was described as "breathtaking" and "the best ever" by people who arrived early for the festival's 9 a.m. kickoff. The event runs through Sunday.

"It's just so beautiful.
