Camping As You Know It Is Dead

Both sad and wonderful, the Eureka! N!ergy tent and E! Power System brings the world of camping to the My Super Sweet 16 set as well as anyone else you know who's a priss. The tent itself comes in medium to extra-large and includes concealed wiring that provides you with power access: three 12-volt jacks to juice up practical devices such as alarm clocks, reading lights and iPods. The system is meant to be used with the E! Power Pak, which requires an additional purchase. Not even all those exclamation points could get us to try this thing out in Queens, though.

A 4-5 person tent will run you about $149, plus about $50 extra for the Power Pak. You'll need a 12v to 110v AC adapter to use everyday camping essentials like your hair dryer from home.

Eureka E! Powered Tent: You Might As Well Stay Home

If you're going to go camping, go camping. Don't use it as an excuse to play Xbox in the woods. This Eureka E! Powered Tent misses the point completely. Would it be kind of convenient to have outlets in your tent so you could plug in stuff like a hairdryer or your Blackberry? Sure. Would you be totally lame to do so? Yes.

Camping the way it was supposed to be — with power

I never really liked camping. There were no electronics, no real shower/bathroom, and you had to sleep next to people that hadn't showered in days. Not to mention all the bugs that would try to slowly devour you throughout the night. A tiny, tiny hole in your tent would cost you 10 mosquito bites. Maybe I would've liked camping a little more if I had the Eureka N!ergy Tent, a tent with 3 12-volt outlets built right in. That way, I could bring one of those mosquito killing contraptions, my laptop, and a few chargers for various devices. Who knows, there might even be EVDO available for some light browsing on my laptop.

Now, some might say having power and electronics when you're camping is cheating. It's not. You're still in a tent, without A/C, and a whole lot of other amenities.

Eureka E! Powered Tent - roughing it is redefined

When I think of camping, I think of roughing it. You know, the kind of camping where you have to hike to get to your campsite, and the most high-tech equipment is a flashlight or a lighter. Unfortunately, with today's “always connected" mentality it's hard to completely unplug for a weekend getaway.

For those that always need to be connected, or have special circumstances that require having power at all times, (medical equipment for example) the Eureka E! is a perfect fit. The tent is wired up with 3 12-volt outlets so you can keep your phone, or whatever else you need charged.

Personally, I'm torn by this product. One part of me looks at it and chuckles at the thought of “roughing it" with glowing 12-volt outlets. The other side of me thinks it would be great to be able to plug in my phone and recharge my laptop in the middle of nowhere.

Programs reveal beauty of spring

IT'S ALMOST SPRINGTIME in the East Bay Regional Parks, and park district naturalists have scheduled a variety of programs to seek out the beauties of the season.

For example, there's an easy two-mile walk planned for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Diablo Foothills Regional Park at the end of Castle Rock Road in Walnut Creek, led by naturalist Sabrina Dussau.

The plan is to check out the plants and animals that inhabit Pine Creek, which runs through Pine Canyon past the spectacular Castle Rock formations. It's not a difficult route, so it's appropriate for the entire family. There's no fee for the activity, but registration is required so Dussau will know how many people to expect. To register, call 510-636-1684. Refer to program number 14089.

Then on Sunday naturalist Mike Moran will lead a longer hike from 10 a.m.
