2008 vehicles are driven by innovation

What started as a glorious tent sale at the Galleria Mall garage 16 years ago has evolved into an exhibit of more than 500 of the newest cars, trucks and motorcycles for South Floridians to peruse without pressure.

The Fort Lauderdale International Auto & Motorcycle Show opened Thursday at the Broward County Convention Center and continues until Sunday night. Although the showcase is half the size of its sister show in Miami, it's still able to give visitors a taste of 2008, including the newest vehicles with alternative-fuel sources.

GM has the largest display of green cars, which include models that run on either E85 ethanol or gasoline, such as the 2007 Chevy Silverado and the 2007 Chevy Tahoe.

GM also is displaying its model for a hydrogen-run Chevrolet Equinox, an SUV with a 3.6-liter DOHC V-6 engine.

Michigan judge sued by auction company accused of underselling classic car

PHOENIX -- A Michigan judge is being sued by an Arizona collector car auction company after he accused the firm of underselling his classic vehicle.

David Clabuesch said his 1970 Hemi 'Cuda sold for $300,000 at Scottsdale's Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in January but the muscle car should have fetched $700,000 to $1 million.

Barrett-Jackson is suing Clabuesch in U.S. District Court in Phoenix for "outrageous and defamatory actions," including chaining the car's wheels at the auction tent and putting up a sign calling its sale void.

Internet chats and blogs regarding Clabuesch's claims are harming the car auction's business interests, Virginia Llewelyn, Barrett-Jackson's corporate counsel, said Friday.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday, seeks unspecified damages and asks Clabuesch to stop maligning Barrett-Jackson.

One Native Life

My grandfather's name was John Wagamese. Our family name, Wagamese, comes from an Ojibway phrase meaning 'man walking by the crooked water.' It was shortened by the treaty registrar because Wagamese was all he could pronounce of it, but it came from the trapline my great-great-grandfather established along the Winnipeg River. The same one my grandfather walked all his life.
He was a bush man, John Wagamese. There was nothing he didn't know of it, couldn't comprehend or even predict. The land was as much a part of him as his skin and he wore it proudly, humbly and with much honour. In our patch of northern Ontario, north of Lake of the Woods, he was a legend. People still talk about how strong he was. He carried a moose carcass ten miles out of the bush one time, and another he fashioned an elaborate harness from the canvas of his tent and hauled 120 pounds of blueberries a day's walk to the northern store for sale.
