RV and camper show coming to Augusta
AUGUSTA - One of New England's 10 best camper and RV shows will be at the Augusta Maine Civic Center Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 16-18. The entire building is sold out, according to Robert J. Cole, president of America's Best Shows Inc., producer of the event. RV camping is still regarded as an economical way for families or couples to spend vacations, or to have a home away from home. Visitors will see many campers outdoors, and inside the civic center there will be campground exhibits, finance and service exhibitors, RV exhibits from tent trailers to luxurious motor coaches, and a Maine Campground Owner's Association booth, which will provide free campground guides. Free RVing DVDs will also be handed out to new camping families or to anyone wanting to learn more about the RV lifestyle.
Corteo balances comedy and drama
It's difficult to keep my concentration on Jeff Raz. He's the star clown of Corteo, the latest Cirque du Soleil spectacle to reach Houston. As you'd expect of a star clown, Raz is anything but boring. But directly over his shoulder, I can see acrobatic duo Oleg Ouchakov and Evgeniya Astashkina practicing their routine. One moment Astashkina is standing on Ouchakov's shoulders; the next, she's balancing on one hand on her partner's outstretched arm, her toes pointed to the sky. This is what it's like behind the scenes at Corteo, two days before its Thursday opening in Cirque du Soleil's blue-and-gold Grand Chapiteau. This time, that Big Top is set up next to Sam Houston Race Park in northwest Houston. The "artistic tent," adjacent to the Big Top, is the next largest in the complex of tents and trailers that make up the Corteo village.
Despite downpours, beats go on at dance-music fest
Day 2 of the Ultra Music Festival on Saturday was all about big beats, soaring trance and funky breaks -- along with some rain. This weekend marks the first time Ultra, the Winter Music Conference's most popular event now in its ninth year, has expanded to two days, a testament to the dance music extravaganza's success. In between the raindrops, British DJ duo Sasha & Digweed tore up the Main Stage with high-energy tech-house as trippy, colorful visuals flashed on the eight video screens around them. Over at the Amnesia Tent, DJ Tiga -- whose claim to fame is a decidedly non-hip-hop remix of Nelly's hit Hot In Herre -- powered the crowd with filthy electro house. Stacked trailer cars covered in artful graffiti surrounded the stage, capturing and magnifying the bass to give it extra oomph.
Lafayette County Health Dept. asks residents to monitor CO
DARLINGTON -- Nine people were taken to the hospital after becoming ill at a theater. A camper was found dead in his trailer. A couple were forced to leave their new home due to illness after only one month living there. Each of these cases was caused by carbon monoxide -- a colorless, odorless, tasteless and potentially lethal gas. Every year, hundreds of people in the United States are killed by carbon monoxide and thousands more become ill. Home and portable carbon monoxide detectors and regular furnace inspections could prevent many of these accidents. Carbon monoxide, or CO, is created when fuels such as gasoline, kerosene, wood, coal, oil, natural gas and charcoal, do not have enough oxygen to burn completely. When you breathe in CO, it replaces the oxygen in your blood.
