Gay couple weds in Mexico City

MEXICO CITY -- An economist and a journalist became the first couple united under Mexico City's new gay civil union law, kissing while an orchestra played ''Besame Mucho'' and police cordoned off streets around a white wedding tent filled with guests.

The new law, which took effect on Friday, grants same-sex couples inheritance rights and social benefits similar to those enjoyed by married heterosexual couples. It reflects a growing acceptance of homosexuality in what has traditionally been a macho society, as well as a willingness by Mexico City to join the international debate on gay marriage.

After dating for four years and three months, journalist Antonio Medina, 38, and economist Jorge Cerpa, 31 were united in front of the government offices for Mexico City's Iztapalapa borough, signing documents under a banner that read ''Civil Union Law: Your right to choose.''

Mexico City Has First Same-Sex Civil Union

On Friday, March 16, two men had a civil union in Mexico. They were the first same-sex couple to take advantage of Mexico City's new civil union law, passed in November, which gives them rights like the ones straight married couples have, according to the Associated Press.

The couple was Antonio Medina, 38, and Jorge Cerpa, 31. Medina is a journalist and Cerpa is an economist, the news service reports. The two had the civil union outside Mexican government offices. There were many people cheering for them.

Before they had the civil union, they were together for over four years. During the ceremony, they smooched to the soundtrack of “Besame Mucho," yet police also stood guard in their wedding tent.

This civil union is particularly significant, says the AP, when one takes the culture of Mexico into consideration.

Town wowed by Liz's wedding

Winchcombe - A posse of photographers and scores of spectators descended on Saturday on a quiet town in western England before a lavish wedding party for model-actress Elizabeth Hurley and businessman Arun Nayar.

Gloucestershire County Council confirmed media reports that the pair married on Friday in a private civil ceremony at Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe, west of London.

Hurley, 41, and Nayar, 42, were planning to hold a blessing and party at the castle later on Saturday, with guests including Elton John, Kate Moss and Hurley's ex, Hugh Grant.

Security guards on Saturday patrolled the grounds of the 15th-century castle, set amid the Cotswold hills of western England. A large tent had been erected in the grounds, and a covered walkway led from the gardens to the building.

The Wedding of Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin

For Tinseltown twosome Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin, when the time arrived to choose a wedding venue, there was no place like home. On March 29, 1997, as the sun set over the City of Angels, the former "Melrose Place" cast member donned a body-conscious ivory Vera Wang creation and walked out into her own back yard, where 175 guests, including Tori Spelling, Jennifer Tilly and Tony Danza, waited beneath the shelter of a sheer white tent.

Once inside, the bride's diaphanous veil, which trailed behind her, gently brushed the fragrant rose petals that had been scattered in her honor as she made her way toward the former "L.A. Law" star, who wore a black-on-black Gucci ensemble for the occasion.

Their candles illuminating the darkening sky, family and friends encircled the couple as they read from Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" and pledged their devotion, forming an unbroken bond of love as the bride and groom presented each other with platinum wedding bands by jeweler Phillip Press.
